This is just a quick update on the massive Burj Dubai development, showing a happy band of construction workers as they reached the world record height of 601 meters - No champagne, we see - can’t imagine why.

As the tower has continued to grow, it is becoming the dominant landmark on the Dubai skyline, this is a selection of photos taken at the end of February - beginning of March. They are taken from a variety of positions around the city and already the major feature is the Burj Dubai skyscraper.

Dubai continues to grow at an astounding pace and these pictures show a planned bridge which will become the biggest, tallest arch bridge in the world when complete.
New York Architect, FXFOWLE’s proposal for the architectural design of a 1-mile long and 673-feet tall bridge in Dubai was selected by the country’s Roads & Transport Authority in a major international design competition. The firms winning bridge design is poised to join five existing Dubai Creek crossings (four bridges and one tunnel), further advancing the infrastructure and transportation initiatives in Dubai. Construction will begin next month.

The Burj al Alam (which means “World Tower” in English) would be a 108 storey, 501m skyscraper in the Business Bay area of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Burl al Alam would constitute of 74 floors of office space, a retail area at the base, and a high-end hotel and serviced apartments in the top 27 floors. The plan for the hotel section is to make is the world’s highest set of hotel rooms which would be over 400m high. The crown of the building which would be the final 6-storeys would have a Turkish bath, sky garden, and other club facilities. Expected completion date is 2010.

Dredging in progress
Nakheel, the UAE government owned developer announced this Thursday that they have finished work on the 17-mile long breakwater that will protect The World development.
The World is a man-made archipelago of 300 islands off the coast of Dubai. The final stone brought the total amount of stone laid up to 34 million tonnes. The Islands themselves are spread over an area 4.3 long by 5.6 miles wide.
The director of the project, Hamza Mustafa said the land reclamation required dredging 320 million cubic meters of sand from the sea bed and the creation of the breakwater.

The next phase of the project will be to hand over the individual Islands to developers for the construction and infrastructure to be built.

Construction continues at a furious pace on the Burj Dubai skyscraper. The latest update on the 27th December states that the current floor having been completed is 158, making the tower 598.5 meters tall thus far. After the next 30 meters have been finished, the Burj will be the world’s tallest structure.
